GLP-1 Nutrition Support From NZ Registered Dietitians
Medication may change how much you feel like eating—but your body still needs adequate energy, protein, fluid, fibre, vitamins and minerals.
When appetite decreases or digestive symptoms make eating more difficult, it can become harder to meet these needs consistently. Some people may begin skipping meals, relying on a limited range of foods or feeling unsure about what and how much they need to eat.
Whether you are considering GLP-1 treatment, have recently started medication or have been using it for some time, individualised nutrition support can help you feel more confident that your eating pattern is supporting your health.
At ABC Nutrition, we focus on nourishment, nutritional adequacy and sustainable health behaviours—not restrictive rules or food guilt.
How We Support You
Your dietitian can support you with:
✔ Maintaining adequate nutrition when your appetite is reduced
✔ Meeting your individual protein needs and supporting muscle health
✔ Finding manageable meals and snacks when larger portions feel uncomfortable
✔ Managing nutrition-related concerns such as nausea, reflux, constipation or diarrhoea
✔ Supporting hydration and fibre intake
✔ Identifying possible gaps in vitamin and mineral intake
✔ Supporting blood glucose, cholesterol and cardiovascular health where relevant
✔ Building realistic eating habits that remain useful over the long term
There is no single “GLP-1 diet” that works for everyone. Your advice will be tailored to your medication, health, symptoms, food preferences, routine and relationship with food.
You may benefit from seeing a dietitian if you are:
✔ Considering starting a GLP-1 medication
✔ Taking Ozempic®, Wegovy®, Mounjaro® or another prescribed GLP-1 medication
✔ Frequently skipping meals or finding it difficult to eat enough
✔ Unsure whether you are meeting your protein or nutritional needs
✔ Experiencing digestive symptoms or changes in food tolerance
✔ Struggling to drink enough fluid
✔ Eating a more limited range of foods than usual
✔ Managing diabetes, insulin resistance, high cholesterol or other health concerns
✔ Looking for practical meal and snack ideas that suit a smaller appetite
You do not need to wait until you are experiencing significant problems. Nutrition support can begin before starting medication or at any stage during treatment.

-
From a nutrition perspective, while these medications can be helpful, they are not nutritionally neutral.
Because GLP-1s reduce appetite and slow digestion, they can unintentionally lead to:
1. Inadequate Energy Intake
Skipping meals or eating very small portions
Difficulty meeting baseline energy needs
2. Reduced Protein Intake
Increased risk of loss of lean muscle mass, which is important for metabolic health
3. Micronutrient Deficiencies
Lower intake of key nutrients such as:
Vitamin C
Calcium
Vitamin D
Iron
B vitamins
Selenium
Zinc
This is where we are seeing broader trends emerge, such as rising cases of nutritional deficiencies (including scurvy, osteopenia, and anaemia) when intake becomes too limited or repetitive.
4. Gastrointestinal Side Effects
Nausea, reflux, constipation or diarrhoea
Food aversions, which can further reduce variety
