Are dietitians and nutritionists the same?

All dietitians (dieticians) are degree-qualified nutritionists.

However, not all nutritionists are qualified dietitians. A dietitian is an expert in nutrition. They are qualified to provide treatment, education, and support to people requiring nutrition information and advice relating to medical and surgical treatments and in the management of chronic diseases (such as diabetes and heart disease), as well as for general health.

To practise in New Zealand, by law a dietitian must be registered with the Dietitians Board and hold a current practising certificate, work within a specified scope of practice, participate in a continuing competency programme and adhere to a Code of Ethics. The educational prerequisites for registration are completion of a 2-year Masters Degree (previously a 18-month postgraduate diploma), with entry restricted to those who have successfully completed a relevant 3-year Bachelor’s degree in Human Nutrition.

On the other hand, the term ‘nutritionist’ is not regulated and can be used by anyone. Therefore, a nutritionist may have completed a Bachelor’s degree in nutrition or no formal training at all.

At ABC Nutrition all our dietitians are registered with the Dietitians Board and hold a current Annual Practising Certificate. They are also all paid members of Dietitians New Zealand.

  • "The main reason I went to see Angela at ABC Nutrition was to help me lose weight. Not only was I able to lose weight but the nutrition education was fantastic. I thought I knew and understand all about the 'good' foods to eat and the necessary foods to include in my daily diet. I soon realised that I did not! "

    Kim, Sales Rep

  • "Angela guided me throughout the weeks' and always encouraged me by saying 'the slower the better, just make small changes gradually'. It really helped me with my thinking as I have always wanted the 'fast' approach. I would highly recommend Angela and her team for anyone wanting nutrition education and support."
